Dongguan is located in the south
east of Guangdong Province, on the east bank of the Pearl River, Guangzhou to the north
and Shenzhen to the south. It has 33 towns and districts under its jurisdiction, covering
a total area of 2465 square kilometers, with a permanent population of 1.47 million. There
are more than 700,000 Dongguan people living in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 200,000
overseas, which makes the city a famous overseas Chinese city. Within 100 km radius of
Dongguan City, the population is well over 30 million, with an additional 10 million

Dongguan is an ancient city at south of the Five Ridges, whose history dates back to 5000
years ago. More than 150 years ago, the destruction of opium in Humen marked the beginning
of Chinese modern history. There are many scenic spots and historical sites in Dongguan,
among which one is the opium-burning site in Humen during the Opium War in Qing Dynasty.
Opium worth millions of dollars were ordered to be burned at sight by the Qing Government
and a campaign of a ban on opium-smoking and trade started through whole China. Situated
at the center of Dongguan City, Keyuan Garden built in the Xianfeng period in Qing
Dynasty, is one of the four famous gardens in Guangdong Province.
